Interview with Karen Hudgins

Hi Shirley,

1  As an author, what do you find is your most difficult obstacle to overcome?”

Balancing what I’d like to do in writing with what I can realistically accomplish.

2  I see you are no stranger to being published.  What was the catalyst that sat you down at a desk or computer to write romance fiction?

First, the fiction writing bug bit me. Then, romance kept stealing the scenes in my mystery stories. Finally, writing romance novels feels good.

3  The website blurb for your new book “Tonight with Tarzan” sets your story in Picardy Heights.  Right away I asked myself where is that?

Picardy Heights is the fictional setting used in the series: One Night With Zorro, Midnight With Maverick, and now Tonight With Tarzan. Geographically, it’s an historic community in central Missouri and is based on the Central West End in St. Louis. Picardy Heights is a character in its own right.

4  Is writing a full time occupation for you?

 Writing is my part-time career.

5  The big question for all of us out there writing fiction is how to get readers to take notice.  Do you have any successful tips to share?

Promote to readers who want to read romance, and half your work is done.

Write really, really good books so when you talk it up you’ll project enthusiasm.

Believe in the value of the romance genre.

Write many books and keep your name in the game.

Our books sell themselves best—give some away!

6  How did you learn about Wings ePress?

I met Lorraine Stephens at a conference in Memphis, shortly before Wings was born.

7  Do you belong to any kind of writers group?   If yes, has that been helpful for you?  If the answer is no, is it something you are thinking about, or something for which you have no interest?

Yes, there have been groups along the way. I currently belong to MORWA, a local chapter of RWA. Networking and friendships and education prove invaluable.

8  On your website you speak of the fun you have dreaming up stories.  Elaborate on this.

Using my imagination is fun. Period. It’s my first step in story writing and lasts all the way through until “The End.”

9  How has writing enhanced your own personal life?

Many ways. Novel writing offers me a challenging and rewarding creative outlet.  Writing keeps my mind healthy. Writing helps me establish another professional identity—separate from my day job. For me, writing is home-based, thus convenient and comfortable. Writing leads me to interesting people and places. Writing offers me a unique way to give to others.
